Existing buildings – thermal modernisation.
According to available estimates it is possible to reduce energy consumption in the European Union by 20% without any additional costs, and even reaping benefits of lower fuel and energy expenditures.
The potential for energy savings is even higher in Poland, since the efficiency of energy utilisation is still lower than the EU average efficiency. A significant share of the potential for energy savings relates to the energy consumption in buildings, which makes up more than a 40% share of the total energy consumed in Poland. Moreover, around 70% of this amount is used in buildings for heating purposes. Therefore space heating in buildings constitutes ca. ¼ of the energy consumed in the country.
Considering the fact that buildings’ demand for heating is almost two times higher in Poland compared to good European standards, the envisaged improvement of the efficiency in space heating may result in the reduction of the national energy consumption by more than 10%. This energy saving would result in comparable CO2 emission reductions. Under the current price of emission permits in the EU ETS the potential benefits can be estimated to be billions of Euros per year in the country.
